Eating disorders, unfortunately, are very common among women in the world. However, what many people don’t realize is that a surprising number of men actually have eating disorders, as well.
Regardless of gender or age of the person with the disorder, the point is that these issues are rarely about food at all. Generally, these things occur when people feel out of control in their lives and can’t figure out how to get back on track. They turn to food, which is something that they can control, and manipulate it depending on their current emotional situation.
Some people don’t eat because of their eating disorder. This is known commonly as Anorexia. It is by far one of the two most popular eating disorders that you will find, and it can be scary. Not eating can damage the organs, the bones, and make a person very weak and unhealthy. However, when they have a need to control this type of situation, they aren’t worried about their health. People who have anorexia or other eating disorders will generally tell you that they have everything under control, not to convince you but to convince themselves. The reality is that they have nothing under control and don’t know what to do.
The other most popular eating disorder is bulimia, which is a disease where people binge eat and then make themselves vomit to get rid of the food before it digests. Both of these disorders, as well as other food issues, are generally caused by anything but the food and are very dangerous. The causes are varied and until a person realizes that they have a problem and where it came from, they cannot get the help that they need.
There are many variations on these two diseases, and some people will present with both forms of these eating disorders at once. Some people have diseases where they will chew food for the taste, but not actually swallow or consume it, and some have feeding tubes specifically so they can regulate what goes into their bodies. An eating disorder is anything that puts a person’s normal eating habits out of order, and they can affect anyone. Left untreated, these disorders can lead to more serious issues, illness, and even death, which is why it is important for people to understand that there is help and they are not going to be shunned for their disease. The internet has made this a much more public issue, which is both good and bad in some cases.
